BETTY

Betty, the furious, raging, desperate incarnation of the guilt of a group of executives with the world’s balls in their hands.

Betty has no mouth and yet she must stomp. Betty the carbon-black silhouette, changing size and shape at furious will. Betty, who can kick through time and space in ways only a footprint can.

Betty is the collective conscience of Big Oil and knows the terrifying future civilization faces. She’s desperate to imprint this dark knowledge onto the world before she’s recaptured. From a single guilty tear she is bonded to Bella, and will do anything - anything - to reveal the truth.

ZENA

Zena is Bella’s mother. She’s determined to stop the nonsense and make something of Bella, starting with finding the father figure she believes Bella needs. Zena is brutally divorced, newly moved to the country, on the hunt for a career, a husband and a very material lifestyle.

The fact that the men she lands are the very worst modern masculinity has to offer means her chase for perfection is going to be... interesting.

YOU

You are the you that is YOU, that is who. Win this chance, and there will be TWO of you.

Firstly, the real you, obviously, the one who has to stick around in the real world and deal with non-drawn, real events. Boring? Climate change suggests otherwise.

BELLA

“Sarcastic”, “selfish”, and “snide”. Words that pop to mind like poison arrows in the company of Bella Tollman.

It’s fair to say much of Bella’s anger comes from comparing life as she wants it to the frustrations of reality. Her parents' brutal divorce. The unwanted move. And now… the footprint. Bella wanted a dog. She was landed with an insane pet determined to show her a future she doesn’t want to know about.

Bella has ambitious, self-centred dreams and she wants them back. Whoever gave her the task of saving civilization from itself was either playing 4D chess or had very poor taste in teenage heroes. Or is there a crack in Bella’s armour somewhere?

ANETA

Aneta’s hands were born to hold a placard.

But her heart is in the right place - your business. If your business happens to involve Aneta’s cause-of-the-day, that is. From The Cruelty to Asparagus Campaign to Just Stop Gravel, Aneta is an angel with, so far, a slightly misguided sense of priorities.

Aneta was universally ignored by all, Bella included... before Betty the footprint came along. The fact that she’s the only one who can see Betty and is also willing to help has turned her into, much to Bella’s regret, Bella’s best friend.

If Aneta knew the trouble this would get them into, perhaps she might not be quite so eager.

BELEN

Belen wanted to become a journalist. She had the nosiness, but knew she didn't have the courage. She hardly even whispered to the regulars she served in her family's durian restaurant.

Then the typhoon came. The biggest ever to hit the Philippines. Ignoring warnings to rush home, Belen encountered a dog trapped in floating debris, and just had to help it.

It wasn't a dog. It didn't just rescue her from the tidal surge, it brought her to a crazy foreign girl's house the other side of the world.

But the crazy footprint doesn't seem interested in taking her back home. Must she somehow repay her debts before she can be restored to her family, if they're still alive? Or is her curiosity being used as its tool?

WILDA

Bella’s great aunt. The lead singer of the 60s psychatrollic band Emperors of Atlantis, she has accepted Zena and Bella into her home, having sold the van and given normality a whirl.

But then again, becoming great again is, like, really trending... why not reform the band and get those damn conspiracies she reads about online unmasked through the power of vibe?

Graham

Graham is Zena’s first post-divorce partner and attempt at father figure for Bella. An oil-marketing executive, despite his high self-regard, he has made upward failing almost an art form. It is he who introduces Betty the footprint to Bella via a series of mishaps caused by petty jealousy. He was never important enough to have his guilt removed, as was standard elsewhere in the upper echelons of the company.

But now he’s released his industry’s secrets, he’s certainly not man enough to take responsibility.

KLEPP

Klepp is the CEO of Grunt Oil & Gas, the most successful fossil fuel company capitalism has unleashed, and the de facto head of all fossil fuel production everywhere. Charming, intelligent, witty, and with all the humanity of a nuclear warhead.

Once upon a time, in simpler days, he allowed a report by his own scientists into the effects of CO2 generated by his industry to land on his desk. The horrors he read made even him incapable of work.

Luckily he found a way to get that guilt extracted. The rest of the industry followed. Conscience-free, they can continue drilling hard for profit. Now that guilt has escaped. And he really wants it back.
